About Echuca
Echuca means “meeting of the waters” and is located near the junction of the Goulburn, Campaspe and Murray Rivers and is the traditional lands of the Yorta Yorta nation.
Modern day Echuca was found in 1850 when Henry Hopwood starting ferrying people and goods across the Murray River. Although by the 1870s Echuca had become Australia’s largest inland port, with the arrival of rail transport, it had already started to decline as early as the 1890s.
Although agriculture is very important to the region, the main industry in Echuca is tourism.
